Which formation should you pick?

You lock your formation before the first pick and cannot change it afterwards, so it is the single most important decision in the game. Here is what each shape actually does to your draft.

A formation in Dream Draft XI is not a tactic you tweak during the match — it is a shopping list. It decides how many goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward slots you must fill, and therefore which positions you will be offered cards for and in which order.

The five formations at a glance

Comparison of the five formations available in Dream Draft XI
    FormationShapeBest for
    4-3-34 defenders · 3 midfielders · 3 forwardsBalanced first-timers
    4-4-24 defenders · 4 midfielders · 2 forwardsMidfield-heavy drafts
    3-5-23 defenders · 5 midfielders · 2 forwardsRisk-takers
    4-2-3-14 defenders · 2 holding · 3 attacking mids · 1 strikerModern, attack-minded squads
    5-3-25 defenders · 3 midfielders · 2 forwardsDefensive, low-variance play

    4-3-3

    4 defenders · 3 midfielders · 3 forwards

The default and the safest choice. Three forwards means three chances to land a superstar attacker, and the flat midfield three is easy to fill from the safe pool. If you have no plan, draft this.

    4-4-2

    4 defenders · 4 midfielders · 2 forwards

Two strikers instead of three, with an extra midfielder. Useful when the draft keeps offering you strong central players and you want to spread quality across the pitch rather than stacking the front line.

    3-5-2

    3 defenders · 5 midfielders · 2 forwards

Only three defenders, so a troll pick at the back hurts less in proportion — but a bad centre-back is still a hole. Five midfield slots give you the most chances to hit country synergy with players from the same nation.

    4-2-3-1

    4 defenders · 2 holding · 3 attacking mids · 1 striker

One striker but three attacking midfielders. This is the shape that most closely matches how real 2026 squads line up, and it suits drafts where wingers keep appearing in your card pool.

    5-3-2

    5 defenders · 3 midfielders · 2 forwards

The most conservative shape. Five defensive slots means five safe picks early, which keeps your average rating steady, but you have fewer attacking slots to spend a legend on.

How to choose in ten seconds

    • First few games? 4-3-3.
    • Playing a friend who drafts aggressively? 5-3-2 — a steady average beats a boom-or-bust squad more often than people expect.
    • Chasing a big score for the weekly leaderboard? 3-5-2 or 4-2-3-1, and spend your risky picks in the final third.
    • Playing online? Your opponent's shape does not have to match yours, so pick for your own comfort, not theirs.

    One thing people forget

Positions are hard-locked. If a troll pick lands in a defensive slot in 5-3-2, that low rating is dragging down five sixths of your back line's contribution for the whole match. Wide shapes with fewer defenders limit that damage, but they also give you fewer safe, predictable picks. Every formation is a trade between floor and ceiling.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I change formation after the draft starts?
No. The formation locks with your first pick so nobody can reshape the squad around the cards they happened to be offered. Choose it deliberately before you begin.
Which formation is best for beginners?
4-3-3. It is balanced, the slots are easy to fill from the safe pool, and three forward slots give you three chances at a match-winning attacker.
Does the formation change the match simulation?
It changes the shape your players take on the pitch and therefore where chances come from, but it does not add a hidden bonus. A well-drafted 5-3-2 beats a badly drafted 4-3-3.
Do both players use the same formation online?
No. In online rooms each manager chooses their own shape independently, so you can go five at the back while your friend goes all-out attack.
