Safe vs risky picks: a drafting strategy guide

Every turn gives you the same question: play it safe, or roll the dice? Here is how the two pools actually differ and where each one belongs in your draft.

What the two buttons really do

A safe pick narrows the card pool to dependable players in a middle band of quality. You will rarely be thrilled and you will rarely be wrecked. A risky pickopens the whole database: every legend, every 90-plus superstar — and every troll. Because ratings are hidden during the draft, you are betting on names and reputation, not numbers.

Troll picks are the real cost of risk

Risk mode can hand you a joke character with a very low rating, and that player is hard-locked into the slot. You cannot reroll them away. One troll in a squad of eleven pulls the average down noticeably; two in the same line usually loses the match on its own. This is why risk is a budget, not a habit.

A simple rule: risk late, risk high

    1. Goalkeeper — always safe. A single keeper carries an entire defensive phase in the simulation and there is no second keeper to cover for them.
    2. Defenders — mostly safe. You have three to five of these slots. Consistency here is what keeps your floor high.
    3. Midfield — mixed. Take one gamble here if your defence came out strong. Midfield is also where nationality synergy is easiest to build.
    4. Attack — risk. The upside of a legend or a 90-plus forward is largest in the final third, and by then you know how much cushion your squad has.

Boosts, and why you should not chase them

    • On fire — awarded for a run of strong picks.
    • Captain — a leadership bonus on one player.
    • Legend mode — for landing a legend card.

Each of these can land at most once per team per game. That cap matters: three risky picks in a row will not triple your bonus, they will just triple your chance of a troll. Take the gamble that could win you a boost, then go back to building a solid average.

    Nationality synergy

Players from the same country add a synergy bonus, shown as gold pass lines between them on the pitch. If two of your picks already share a nation, a third from the same country is worth more than a slightly higher-rated player from elsewhere. Legends have their own synergy on top. Grouping nationalities down a single flank is the cheapest way to add points without gambling.

The coach is a strategy decision too

The twelfth pick carries heavy weight in the final score — enough to rescue an average eleven. If your draft went badly, do not shrug and take the first name you recognise: this is the pick where a careful choice recovers the most ground.

    Playing against a human

Online, you cannot see your opponent's cards, only how many picks they have made. That means you are playing against an average, not against a specific team. Against unknown opposition a steady squad with one big swing wins more often than an all-or-nothing draft.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a risky pick ever worth it?
Yes, but choose your moment. The risky pool covers the full rating range, so it is where legends live — and where troll cards live too. Take the gamble early, while you still have picks left to repair the damage, or when you are already behind and a safe pick will not be enough.
    What is a troll pick?
A deliberately terrible joke card from the risky pool: a very low rating, hard-locked into the position you drafted it for. It cannot be rerolled, so treat it as the price of gambling rather than a bug.
What rating range does a safe pick give?
Safe picks are drawn from roughly 80 to 92. You will rarely land a 93-plus legend that way, but you will also never be handed a troll.
How do I trigger the boosts?
Boosts come from how you draft, not just who you draft: strong picks in a row light up ON FIRE, your highest-rated card can become captain, and a legend in the eleven can trigger Legend Mode. Each one lands at most once per team per game.
